New Zealand: War Medals

New Zealand citizens who served in the Armed Forces during the Second World War were awarded the same medals as British servicemen. They could also be awarded the New Zealand War Service Medal.

The New Zealand Service Medal 1946-49

Ribbon: White with black edges and narrow red central stripe.

Instituted: 23 April 1995 by Queen Elizabeth II.

Awarded: For service with the British Commonwealth Occupation Force in Japan, 23 March 1946 to 31 March 1949, for at least 28 days.

Vietnam Medal

Ribbon: Yellow with three narrow central red stripes and red borders, edged with a dark blue stripe to the wearer's right and a light blue one to his left.

Instituted: July 1968.

Awarded: Service in Vietnam from 29 May 1964 for at least 28 days aboard ship, one day on land with an operational unit or 30 days on other duties.
